NEW YORK, NY – Sixteen people were injured, one seriously, in a bus accident on a ramp near the Port Authority terminal around 9:30 a.m Saturday, Aug. 29, the New York Times reports.
All sixteen people, including the bus driver, were transported to local hospitals after the bus crashed into a barrier at 39th Street and Ninth Avenue, the Port Authority said.
Kevin Ramdayal, a New York Fire Department deputy chief, said multiple individuals were found on the ground outside of the bus while passengers were stuck inside.
The bus, operated by New Jersey Transit on the 156 line, sustained major damage to the front end, making it difficult for first responders to enter. The one person who was critically injured was found inside the bus. The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The cause of the bus accident is unknown, and an investigation is underway, according to the Port Authority. The bus was headed to the terminal from Fort Lee, N.J., according to a spokesperson for N.J. Transit. The intersection near the terminal where the accident happened is among the busiest and most dangerous in New York City.
