A recent report compiled by Localize.city highlights how dangerous some spots can be for bicyclists and pedestrians in New York City. Particularly dangerous areas, according to the report, are the intersections near bridges and areas that pass under elevated tracks. These areas are often narrow, yet need to handle heavy traffic that includes:
- Motor vehicles
- Bicycles
- Pedestrians
All of these different modes of transportation in a narrow area can easily lead to collisions and serious injuries. While some of the spots on the city list are already getting safety-related upgrades from the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), much more work is necessary to make these areas safer.
Topping the list is Williamsburg — specifically, the south side of Williamsburg approaching the bridge. This ranking probably comes as no surprise to anyone who rides a bicycle or walks across the bridge on a regular basis. Access to the bridge is not intuitive; this confusion has resulted in dozens of injury accidents and one fatality in this area alone since 2013.
Other dangerous spots around NYC include:
Brooklyn
- Downtown Brooklyn
- Crown Heights/Bedford-Stuyvesant
The Bronx
- Fordham/University Heights
Manhattan
- Lower East Side/Little Italy/Soho
Queens
- Corona
- Jackson Heights
- Flushing
- Ridgewood
- Jamaica
Staten Island
- St. George/Tompkinsville
Stapleton
