BROOKLYN, NY – At least one person was injured when a three-story building under construction collapsed on July 1.
The Body Elite Gym at 348 Court Street collapsed just before 5:00 p.m. CBS 2 New York reports that building management hired a construction company to add more windows and make changes to the interior.
Several weeks before the collapse, the Department of Buildings ordered them to stop work. A gym employee told CBS 2 that he did not believe the construction project caused the building’s failure.
One person was inside the gym moments before the collapse. An FDNY statement reported that they were able to escape the building before firefighters arrived.
They sustained minor injuries during the incident and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The dramatic scene was captured by surveillance video and witnessed by many bystanders. Video from a nearby building shows multiple pedestrians running from the site of the collapse.
A local store owner described a large plume of dust exploding from the crumbled building. Another neighborhood resident expressed relief that the gym was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing many potential injuries.
The FDNY is investigating the cause of the accident. Public records indicate that the building has a history of structural concerns, which may have caused the collapse.
Timothy Hogan, the Department of Buildings’ Deputy Commissioner of Enforcement, explained that the building had known safety issues, including a bulging exterior wall. DOB records, dating as far back as the 1990s, document multiple reports of inadequate structural stability.
Compensation After a Construction Accident
If you or a loved one were injured in a construction accident, you have the right to seek compensation. A construction accident injury attorney can help you demand damages, including:
- Pain and suffering
- Medical bills
- Rehabilitation services
- Repair or replacement of damaged property
- Lost wages or time from work
- Inability to return to work
- Temporary or permanent disability
Unfortunately, some accidents prove to be fatal. If you lost someone you love due to the recklessness of another party, an attorney can help you initiate a wrongful death claim.
This claim allows you to seek compensation to manage the impact of your loved one’s death, including their final medical bills, funeral and burial expenses, and other financial losses.
Emotional suffering, such as loss of consortium, loss of support and guidance, and other non-economic damages may be available as well.
