Over 100 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene of a crane collapse in Tribeca.
The crane collapsed slightly before 8:30 am today on 40 Worth Street & W. Broadway, stretching across the block and crushing several vehicles as it came down.

“We had a very serious incident this morning,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said, explaining that the person who was confirmed dead had been setting in a parked car.
Two of the people with confirmed injuries, a 45-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man, were taken to Bellevue Hospital though neither appeared to have life threatening injuries.
The crane collapse occurred as construction workers attempted to move the crane into a “safe and secure position” according to the mayor who explained that because winds topped 20 mph, the equipment needed to be secured.
The crane collapse also caused some gas leaks, however officials have stated they haven’t detected dangerous levels.
Prior to this incident, the crane had been utilized to bring air conditioning equipment to the roof of the construction site.
Department of Buildings personnel were at the site on Thursday and approved of the work according to the mayor.
