The NY Daily News reported that around 5:00 p.m. on June 11, a 20-ft box truck hit a cyclist. The accident occurred as the freightliner was leaving a commercial garage and turned onto Park Avenue near East 138th Street.
The driver was turning north on Park Avenue when the truck’s rear wheel struck the cyclist who was traveling in the same direction. A police officer on the scene reported that the truck’s driver did not see the cyclist as he was making the turn.
The 38-year-old cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have not released his name to the public at this time.
After the crash, the truck driver remained at the scene. The police do not believe the driver will face criminal charges for the accident. However, a spokesman from the NYPD stated that the crash is still under investigation.
Commercial Truck Accidents in New York
Commercial trucks play an essential role in our economy, delivering materials and products to businesses and consumers across the nation. Despite their importance in the supply chain, these large vehicles also pose a serious threat to other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians with whom they share the road.
Accidents involving commercial trucks are unfortunately quite common in our state, and these collisions often result in severe or catastrophic injuries.
In the worst-case-scenarios, they prove to be fatal. In 2019 alone, commercial trucks were involved in 19,320 accidents across the state of New York.
Additionally, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which regulates commercial trucking operations, found that New York has one of the highest rates of fatal commercial truck accidents in the country.
Truck accidents happen for a wide variety of reasons, but some of the most common causes are the result of careless or reckless behavior such as:
