TUXEDO, NY – Early on Monday morning, a man was killed after he lost control of his SUV and crashed into a parked tractor-trailer on I-87.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on July 20, as reported by the Daily Voice. Sheik A. Bacchus, 51, was driving his 2013 Dodge Durango on northbound I-87. Near mile marker 38, Bacchus lost control of his SUV and drove off the road. He crashed his car into a 2020 International tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder of the highway.
Bacchus sustained severe injuries during the collision. The Orange County Medical Examiner pronounced Bacchus dead on the scene of the accident.
The tractor-trailer’s driver, Everton M. Barnett, 34, was inside the truck at the time of the collision. However, the police report that Barnett was not injured during the collision.
The New York State Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) arrived on the scene to assist the police with their crash investigation. However, at this time, the police are unsure of what caused Bacchus to lose control of his vehicle.
Possible Compensation After a New York Truck Accident
Commercial truck accidents are unfortunately common throughout the state of New York. Accidents involving commercial trucks are some of the most dangerous because of the size and weight of these vehicles. Between 2015 and 2017, New York was one of ten states with the highest number of fatal commercial truck accidents across the country.
In many cases, these devastating accidents are entirely avoidable, when drivers take precautions and operate their vehicles safely. However, even a single negligent or reckless choice while on the road can have devastating consequences for you and your loved one.
You should never have to pay out of your own pocket for someone else’s negligence. Filing an injury claim can help you seek the compensation you need to pay your bills, recoup lost wages and other expenses, and move on with your life.
The amount of compensation you receive will largely depend on the type and severity of the injuries you sustained during your accident. However, this compensation may cover a wide variety of damages beyond the initial cost of your injury.
Your truck accident injury claim can provide support for numerous physical, emotional, and financial losses, including:
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Medical bills
- Rehabilitation services
- Repair or replacement of personal property
- Lost wages and time from work
- Inability to return to work
- Temporary or permanent disability
A skilled commercial truck accident attorney will help you understand the type of compensation you should seek after an accident. Your lawyer will ensure that you receive the amount of financial support that is appropriate for the severity of your accident.
Although most injury claims end in a settlement, your lawyer will prepare your case to go to trial if necessary, so you do not have to accept less than you deserve.
