On Thursday, March 27, 2015 a powerful explosion destroyed two buildings at 121 and 123 Second Avenue near Seventh Street in New York City. The fire quickly spread to neighboring buildings, injuring at least a dozen people, four of them critically, according to the FDNY. A 23-year-old man was still missing as of Friday morning.
Witnesses described the panic, with residents scrambling down fire escapes and others dashing out of the buildings as the walls collapsed around them. “It was pretty crazy, pretty fast,” said one man.
So far, all eyes have turned to the possibility of a gas leak. Con Edison had been on the site and had reported that the renovation work at several buildings along the block did not meet safety standards. When the injured have been taken care of and shelter found for those now homeless, it will be time to ask some questions. Should the construction have been halted? Should people have been evacuated? Who is responsible?
