Freight elevator accident injures three

BROOKLYN, NY – A construction platform inside a freight elevator collapsed on Monday morning, injuring three workers.

1010 WINS reports that the accident occurred around 8:00 a.m. on June 15. Three elevator mechanics were working on a building under construction at 170 Tillery Street. They were standing on a temporary platform in an elevator shaft when the platform collapsed underneath them.

The workers were located near the fourth floor of the building when the platform gave way. All three fell down the elevator shaft and into the bottom of the elevator pit. An early report on the accident from ABC 7 estimated that the workers fell approximately eight stories.

All three of the workers sustained injuries during the accident. First reports indicate the injuries were not life-threatening. The victims were transported to Methodist Hospital for treatment after the collapse.

At this time, it is unclear what caused the accident. It is believed the platform was overloaded and the additional weight caused it to collapse. The incident is still under investigation by the NYC Department of Buildings.

Construction Accidents and Compensation

When workers are injured in construction accidents, they may face a long process of treatment and recovery. In many cases, they may be unable to return to work for a significant period of time. This loss of income, as well as the high cost of treatment and recovery can put an immense financial burden on the employee and their family.

Most employers have some form of workers’ compensation, which ensures the injured worker can get the necessary treatment and financial support after a work-related injury. However, workers’ compensation policies will not compensate an injured construction worker for pain and suffering, lost union benefits, loss of services of a spouse, and many other items of damages.   In the event of a construction accident it might be possible to file a personal injury lawsuit also known as a third-party injury claim to seek compensation if your injuries were caused by negligence on the part of another company, another contractor, or other entity.

If you are injured in a construction accident, contact an experienced attorney right away.

The amount and type of compensation you receive will depend on the nature and severity of your injuries and other factors. Your lawyer will evaluate your case, calculate your losses and the impact your injuries will have on your life, and will help you understand your rights and legal options.
