BRONX, NEW YORK, NY – A 71-year-old man died last Thursday afternoon after being struck by a tractor-trailer in a hit-and-run collision in the Bronx.
1010 WINS reports that the accident occurred at the intersection of East 138th Street and Exterior Street, in the borough’s Mott Haven neighborhood, at about 4 p.m. on November 12. Police believe that a southbound truck struck the man, who was discovered lying in the intersection.
Emergency responders took the unconscious man to Lincoln Hospital, where he died. His identity has not been publicly released.
The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was continuing its assessment of the case as of Friday afternoon.
Truck Accidents in New York
Commercial trucks are an integral part of New York’s economy, delivering products and services to millions of people every day and linking together the five boroughs of the nation’s largest city. In fact, because the city’s train network is not connected to the national freight rail system, it is particularly dependent on commercial vehicles to move goods. WYNC reports that of the 400 million tons of freight brought into the city every year, more than 90% is handled by truck.
But while these vehicles are a vital aspect of life in New York, they also pose a safety risk to the city’s inhabitants. Large, heavy, and cumbersome, trucks also have major blind spots that limit their drivers’ field of vision. Combined with the number of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists on New York’s roads, these hazards create a perfect storm for potential accidents. In October 2020 alone, NYPD tallied 679 collisions involving large commercial vehicles.
Common causes of truck accidents include:
- Driver inattention or fatigue
- Improperly secured load
- Insufficient training
- Poor vehicle maintenance
- Alcohol/drug use
If you’ve been injured or lost a loved one in an accident involving a commercial vehicle, you may be entitled to financial compensation for any expenses caused by the collision, as well as for your pain and suffering. Examples of possible damages include:
- Past and future medical bills
- Physical therapy
- At-home nursing care
- Residential modifications
- Property damage
- Lost income
- End-of-life care
- Funeral expenses
