Mayor de Blasio Proposes Legislation to Keep Dangerous Drivers Off the Roads
Extension of Vision Zero Campaign Would Expand Speed Enforcement Camera Program, Increase Fines and Suspend Vehicle Registrations for Repeat Offenders
On March 15, 2018, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters of a new group of legislative measures designed to keep dangerous drivers off the roads in the State of New York. Known as the Vision Zero Dusk and Darkness Campaign, the program was introduced in 2014 with the stated goal of reducing traffic fatalities in the City of New York by 50% by 2015. The call to extend Vision Zero comes just days after two small children were killed in a crosswalk in Brooklyn by a woman who allegedly had a medical condition, and who had been cited four times in the last two years for speeding in a school zone. According to the Mayor, the proposed law would beef up the City of New York’s speed enforcement camera program and would require that the DMV be notified by treating physicians of any medical events that could lead to impairment behind the wheel. The legal sanctions would also allow for increased fines for certain moving violations, and would allow the State of New York to suspend the motor vehicle registration of anyone convicted as a repeat offender.
