According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (New York DMV), there were a total of 307,550 motor vehicle accidents in New York State in 2011 alone. These accidents caused injury or death to 178,598 individuals, including 15,986 pedestrians.
Of these accidents, 15,928 were pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents, in which a vehicle such as a car, truck, or motorcycle crashed into a pedestrian. These 15,928 pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents resulted in injury to 16,269 people, including 15,692 pedestrians and bicyclists. These accidents also caused the deaths of 304 people, 297 of which were pedestrians or bicyclists. This is an alarming number of people injured or killed by pedestrian and motor vehicle collisions.
The New York DMV reported on the factors which contribute to motor vehicle accidents. These contributing factors are divided into three categories: accidents caused by human factors; accidents caused by vehicular factors; and accidents caused by environmental factors. More than 75% of the reported accidents where an individual was injured was due to human factors. The following human factors were among the most prevalent:
- Driver Inattention or Distraction;
- Failure to Yield the Right of Way; and
- Pedestrian Error or Confusion.
Only 4.2% of reported accidents were caused by vehicular factors, and 22.5% involved environmental factors, such as:
- Obstructed or Limited View;
- Slippery Pavement; and
- Unique Vehicle Issues.
In short, the best way to avoid pedestrian accidents is to pay attention. This goes for car drivers, and for pedestrians as well. No one wants to be injured or killed in a pedestrian/auto accident.
