During these unprecedented times, the Bronx and Queens have been devastated by COVID-19 and the ramifications of the global pandemic.
Imagine living through this pandemic and not having access to food. Many Bronx and Queens families were struggling for survival before and now are placed in a situation of not being able to work and earn enough money to buy groceries and put food on the table.
Food banks have been rapidly depleted based upon the increased demand and the stress placed upon our system from rising joblessness.
In an effort to combat hunger in the Corona Community, Together We Can Community Resources Center, Inc. (“TWC”), a volunteer-led nonprofit organization established a food bank to help local families get through this challenging time.
Due to overwhelming demand, the food bank was quickly depleted. TWC needed a partner to help restock its food bank and assist families living in Corona, Queens.
In order to accomplish this goal, TWC contacted accident attorney Jacob Oresky and informed him of their situation. Oresky & Associates, PLLC has been representing members of the Corona community for over 30 years.
Jacob Oresky immediately agreed to join with TWC and fund its food bank for the month of May.
Food Drive Kick Off, Flushing Meadows Park, Corona
On May 9, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, TWC kicked off its collaboration with Oresky & Associates, PLLC, and commenced delivering groceries to families in Corona.
The food bank has provided groceries for over 200 families that have been impacted by the virus as a result of these efforts.
Jacob Oresky was next contacted by a group of volunteers from a charity in the Bronx. Oresky & Associates, has been representing accident victims in the Bronx for over 30 years.
The volunteers advised Oresky that many families of laborers were going without food. Workers were not permitted to work and didn’t have funds to buy groceries. The Bronx food pantries were depleted, and families needed assistance.
Bronx Food Drive
Oresky & Associates, PLLC was asked to help 100 families in the Bronx, and to supply groceries for the families of laborers. In response a grocery wholesaler was contacted, and a truck load of groceries was delivered to Oresky & Associates’ Bronx office.
Bags of groceries were put together on East 149th Street in the Bronx, and delivered to laborers to help their families. Oresky & Associates will also continue this project weekly for the entire month of May.
