NEW YORK, NY– A 34-year-old woman was fatally struck by a cement truck while crossing a notoriously dangerous road in New York on Monday morning. The name of the victim has not been released.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the pedestrian was run over on Bushwick Avenue between Troutman and Jefferson streets just after 7:00 a.m.
The cement truck driver, a 49-year-old man, is an employee of Kings Ready Mix Inc. The driver was not criminally charged. Kings Ready Mix Inc. has declined to comment on the accident.
The police department is conduction an ongoing investigation but has disclosed the pedestrian emerged midblock between two parked cars. A spokesperson for NYPD declined to comment on whether the information was obtained by video surveillance, witness statements, or the truck driver’s statement.
Parking is prohibited on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the north side of Bushwick Avenue between Troutman and Jefferson. Police officers at the scene reported video of the fatal crash has not yet been obtained.
The crosswalk, where the accident happened, runs between industrial and increasingly residential neighborhoods. As a result, this places heavy trucks near pedestrians and cyclists. Last summer, the driver of a cement truck struck a cyclist on Bushwick Avenue. The vigil for the cyclist resulted in a dispute between safe street advocates and cement truck company employees.
According to StreetsBlog, there have been 177 crashes on the eight blocks stretch of Bushwick Avenue, between Flushing and Myrtle, since January of last year. A total of 25 cyclists and pedestrians were injured, as well as 44 motorists.
The Department of Transportation reported that New York City is predicted to have the highest number of traffic deaths this year since Mayor De Blasio took office. This year alone, there have been at least 205 road fatalities on streets and highways, compared to 185 this time last year.
Mitch Schwartz, a spokesman for the mayor, commented the city has added infrastructure, including 15 miles of protected bike lanes, this year alone. Mr. Schwartz also added more speed cameras would be placed around the city.
