QUEENS, NY – A moving van overturned on Tuesday morning, throwing seven people from the back of the van and critically injuring three.
A Jamaica Moving and Storage van crashed at approximately 3:30 a.m. on June 2nd. Per QNS, the van overturned while heading east on Belt Parkway near 84th Street. The force of the accident broke open the van’s rear doors, ejecting seven people who were sitting in the back.
The occupants were thrown across the highway; several landed in the woods near the road, and one person landed in a tree. Officials assisting at the scene reported that many of the ejected passengers sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Three people riding in the back of the van were critically injured. Two of these people were transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment. However, the third person, a teenager with serious trauma injuries, was rushed to Long Island Jewish Hospital. There is no information about the occupants’ current condition or prognosis at this time.
A police officer from the 106th Precinct stated that there were no other vehicles involved in the crash, and an initial report indicates that high-speed may have been a factor in the accident. However, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Moving Van & Truck Accidents
Moving vans and trucks present a unique danger on the road because of their size, weight, and cargo. The danger of these vehicles only increases when being operated at high rates of speed and overloaded.
A standard Class C license permits a person to drive vehicles that weigh up to 26,000 pounds. Although some moving trucks may have certain weight restrictions, adding excess amounts of weight to a vehicle can seriously impact a driver’s ability to stop, turn, and change lanes safely.
In 2017, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that trucks weighing over 10,000 pounds were involved in 102,973 serious crashes, and 4,657 of these accidents resulted in a fatality. These jarring statistics demonstrate that heavy vehicles can pose a serious threat to everyone on the road.
Many drivers do not have the experience maneuvering heavy moving trucks or vans, which increases the chance they may cause an accident. Even commercial truckers may be challenged to safely operate a moving tuck under certain circumstances.
