On June 23, two men rented a Penske flatbed truck to transport several tons of steel from Queens to the Bronx. AM NY reports that at approximately 12:30 p.m., the driver lost control of the truck as he was exiting the RFK to Interstate 87 in the Bronx. The flatbed rolled over on the highway and the steel cargo spilled across the road.
Police officers at the scene reported that the driver and a passenger in the truck sustained injuries in the crash. Both men were transported to Lincoln hospital for treatment. However, officers do not believe these injuries were life-threatening
The accident caused significant delays for several miles on the RFK as road crews worked to clear the area. A second flatbed truck was brought in to remove the steel beams from the highway. The overturned vehicle was also towed from the scene. Police diverted RFK traffic onto Bruckner expressway until the Bronx exit was safe to reopen.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
Commercial Truck Accidents in New York City
Driving a large truck, like a flatbed or a box truck, requires more skill and caution than a passenger vehicle. Trucks are more difficult to maneuver, and they do not respond as quickly to acceleration and braking. If a truck driver fails to take adequate safety precautions or makes a mistake while on the road, their actions may have deadly consequences.
Due to the serious threat these vehicles pose, commercial truckers are required to have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which indicates they are trained to safely operate a heavy truck. However, these regulations do not apply to people who rent trucks for personal use.
Anyone over the age of 18 with a driver’s license can rent a large truck and transport heavy cargo. These drivers may not have any training to prepare them to drive this truck, which makes them significantly more likely to cause an accident. Some of the most dangerous mistakes inexperienced truck drivers make include:
- Driving too close to other vehicles
- Attempting to break suddenly
- Failing to properly secure cargo
- Taking tight turns
- Changing lanes without adequate space between vehicles
- Failing to check blind spots
With proper training and careful driving, these errors are entirely preventable. However, when a negligent or inexperienced driver is behind the wheel of a commercial truck, everyone on the road is at risk of a serious accident.
