What to Wear to Court in the Bronx

What to Wear to Court in the Bronx

When you’re heading into court in the Bronx, you’re probably far more concerned about your court outcome than your outfit. However, it’s worth your time to consider what to wear — and what not to wear — into a Bronx courtroom.

Attending court in the wrong outfit can directly impact your case and even leave you facing additional charges like contempt of court.

Why What You Wear to Court in the Bronx Matters

All courts have a dress code. However, not all courts post their dress code online for easy access. This means that figuring out exactly what type of clothing is permitted inside a Bronix courtroom isn’t always easy.

Judges want to see that you take the legal process — and your outcome — seriously. As far as most judges are concerned, your appearance is a direct reflection of your respect for the judicial process.

Dress professionally to send a positive message to the court. Dressing too casually may be perceived as a lack of respect for the court, the legal process, and the judge – which doesn’t bode well for your outcome.

In addition to giving the right impression, you can face direct penalties for violating a court’s dress code. Possible penalties for showing up to court in the wrong attire include being found in contempt of court and having your court date postponed.

What Not to Wear to Court in the Bronx

As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to dress for a Bronx court appearance as you would for a job interview or semi-formal event.

You certainly don’t need to show up in a tuxedo, but dirty work clothes, ripped jeans, or a revealing outfit will likely land you in further trouble with the judge.

Items you should never wear to court in the Bronx include:

  • Baggy clothes
  • Ripped or dirty clothing
  • Tight or revealing clothing
  • T-shirts
  • Miniskirts
  • Tank tops or cami tops
  • Distracting or flashy jewelry
  • Clothing with images or text
  • Sweatpants or sweatshirts
  • Athletic shorts or pants
  • Yoga pants
  • Crop tops
  • Hats

One exception to these general rules is jeans. Wearing jeans in a Bronx courtroom is never recommended, but it’s acceptable if jeans are the only pants you own. If you must wear jeans to court, make sure they are clean, not ripped, and aren’t too tight or baggy.

Clothing Tips for a Bronx Court Appearance

The New York Court system website recommends wearing “conservative clothing” for your court appearance.

Items that the New York City Civil Court website specifically states are not permitted in the courtroom include:

  • T-shirts with curses
  • Belly shirts
  • Plunging necklines
  • Sunglasses
  • Torn clothing

However, this short list is the bare minimum when it comes to dressing for court in the Bronx.

Attempt to dress formally and professionally. Ideal courtroom clothing options include:

  • Full suit
  • Dress pants
  • Khaki pants
  • Button-up shirt or polo
  • Conservative blouse
  • Skirt or dress
  • Closed-toe shoes

If you wear a skirt or dress to court, opt for office-appropriate attire. Dresses and skirts should not be too tight, short, or revealing.

You should never wear flip-flops into a Bronx courtroom. If possible, it’s a good idea to avoid sneakers, sandals, or any casual footwear. Instead, wear dress shoes, flats, or a low heel. If sneakers or work boots are the only shoes you own, make sure they are clean and in good condition.

Choose Your Clothes Carefully When Preparing for Court in the Bronx, NY

Whether you’re seeking compensation for a car accident or are facing criminal charges, going to court is already stressful. Don’t worry too much about what to wear, but be mindful that your appearance can directly impact your case.

Taking the time to plan your outfit and purchase or borrow items you don’t already have can help ensure you don’t face additional stress related to improper courtroom attire in the Bronx.
