Worker injured in New City accident

NEW CITY, NY – A construction worker sustained injuries on Friday afternoon after he was trapped between a building wall and heavy equipment.

Workers were performing construction on the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps Headquarters located at 200 Congers Road. At approximately 2:00 p.m. on August 14, officers from the Clarkstown Police Department received reports that the Ambulance Corps building had partially collapsed. The Ramapo Daily Voice reported that police officers arrived on the scene to find that the building had not collapsed, but a worker was injured on the construction site.

A 49-year-old worker became trapped after his hand was caught between a section of the building’s wall and construction equipment. Personnel from the New City Ambulance and the Rockland Medics 3 arrived on the scene to free the worker and provide initial medical assistance. The man was then transported to Westchester Medical Center for additional treatment and observation. Authorities have not reported the severity of the worker’s injuries or his condition at this time.

Common Construction Site Injuries

Construction work is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. In 2018, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported that 21.1% of all work-related fatalities occurred in the construction industry. Heaving machinery, building debris, and uneven surfaces are just some of the many dangerous circumstances that can easily cause a serious construction site accident.

Due to the dangerous nature of construction work, serious accidents occur frequently on worksites throughout New York. Some of the most common injuries construction workers sustain include:

  • Bruises and lacerations
  • Broken bones
  • Electrocution
  • Burns
  • Neck, back, and spinal cord injuries
  • Illness due to chemical exposure
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Permanent hearing damage
  • Vision loss or blindness due to eye injuries
